Active Chiropractic PC FAQs

Have any chiropractic-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!
  • What does a chiropractic adjustment do?

The chiropractic adjustment serves to restore normal joint motion and function which reduces mechanical and chemical irritation to the surrounding tissue and structures. In turn, will decrease pain by relaxing tight muscles and improve coordination.

  • Will I have to have x-rays taken?

Some chiropractors take x-rays on the majority of patients that they see. Studies have shown that routine spinal imaging does not necessarily improve treatment outcomes, therefore, we do not engage in routine imaging. There are situations that require x-rays such as a traumatic injury or your insurance company requires us to take them but we can do x-rays directly in our office.

  • Is it true that once you have chiropractic treatment, you must keep going back?

No. Once you have improved function and have decreased pain, we will not keep you coming back unless you feel you need to. Many patients choose to continue with “maintenance care” after they are feeling better.

  • Can children benefit from chiropractic care?

Yes. Infants and children can suffer from many of the same musculoskeletal issues that adults deal with but are unable to communicate exactly what is wrong. It is not normal for children to experience chronic pain or discomfort. If your child is frequently complaining of pain or discomfort, it is time to see a healthcare professional.

  • Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No. There are many techniques to restore normal joint function. A “pop” or “crack” is not always necessary. Your doctor is skilled in several types of techniques and will take your comfort or apprehensions into consideration.

  • What causes the “pop” or “crack” sound during an adjustment?

Your spinal and other joints contain a fluid known as synovium. This fluid contains gasses, mostly carbon dioxide. When your joints are adjusted, a vacuum is created within the joint and the gasses or fluids that form a gas bubble. This vacuum creates a “pop” or “crack”.

  • Can a person who has had back surgery have adjustments?

Yes. Your doctor may need to vary their technique to accommodate your situation, so it is important to inform them of any surgery.

  • Can I see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?

Yes. Chiropractic care is very effective in treating the common low back and hip pain associated with the bodily changes associated with pregnancy.

  • Is chiropractic treatment painful?

Most patients find chiropractic care to be a pleasant experience and often have immediate relief.

  • Is chiropractic safe?

Yes. Chiropractic is for people of all ages. A thorough history and exam will determine how your doctor will proceed with safe, effective care.

  • How are Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) educated?

Chiropractors have similar classroom education requirements as Medical Doctors (MDs). Most current graduating chiropractors have a 4-year undergraduate degree before enrolling in a 4-year chiropractic college.

  • What is chiropractic care, and how does it differ from other forms of musculoskeletal treatment?

Chiropractic care centers on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system—particularly the spine—and related nervous system concerns. Chiropractors use hands-on adjustments, spinal manipulations, soft-tissue therapies, rehabilitative exercises, and other techniques. Unlike orthopedic surgery or physical therapy, chiropractic care emphasizes non-invasive manual treatment and spinal alignment, typically involving minimal use of medications or surgical procedures.
